Engaging with Media for Advocacy

An interactive and practical 2-morning x 3.5 hours workshops on communications and working with the media, with a specific focus on:

  • creating media interest in behaviour change campaigns
  • translating policy and research into meaningful media coverage that progresses advocacy priorities.

The workshops will cover strategies for engaging with the media to generate helpful media coverage to achieve policy/advocacy or behaviour change objectives. Participants will gain insight into their point of difference in a cluttered media and campaign environment and a sense of how to communicate that to the public through a positive media presence.

Through sessions with an experienced journalist and a seasoned media advocate, the workshop provide insider insights on topics such as what makes a good media story. It will also provide practical exercises and training on pitching media stories, speaking to journalists and appearing in the media, including delivering key messages and dealing with difficult questions.

WORKSHOP SERIES – Working with lived experience: exploring practices, challenges and mindsets

Explore how people with relevant lived experience and expertise can be partnered with to drive anti-oppressive policy and service design and development.

In this workshop series, Morgan builds the reflective capability of advocates, designers, and practitioners to enable a deeper understanding of participatory approaches and methods for lived experience inclusion to drive and influence social and systemic change.

Strategic Communications and Messaging Online Intensive

This 2 x 3.5 hour (2 mornings) Zoom intensive gives people from the not-for-profit sector and the ‘for purpose sector’ the chance to develop their knowledge and skills to create winning messages for their campaigns and communications.

The strategic communications and messaging Zoom intensive takes participants through the latest research from cognitive linguistics and psychology fields, along with some practical tools to develop communications that win.

Workshop: Nothing about us without us: What is consumer participation and lived experience?

Deep dive into participatory practices and methods and reflect on the role and value of lived experience and expertise in social and systems change contexts. Look at how participatory practices are being used in the context of social change through the lens of real-world examples. Explore and interrogate practices in the field, such as co-design and co-production.

Gain a deeper understanding of the rich history and principles of the consumer and broader movements and be able to locate your work within this context.

Workshop: Making the invisible, visible: The role of power in our work

Delve into different models and frameworks of power and explore how we can shift our practice from ‘doing to and for’ towards ‘working with and alongside’ affected communities. Interrogate how power shows up for us as practitioners in our approaches and practices.

Gain a deeper understanding of the complex power dynamics at play in your work and the organisations and wider systems you work within. Learn how to identify and articulate your power and position within different spaces and relationships and discern between different forms of power.

Workshop: We contain multitudes: An introduction to ethical storytelling in policy and advocacy 

Learn more about ethical storytelling for advocacy. This workshop supports both advocates and practitioners to build their knowledge, skills and confidence in unpacking the ethics of representation and better understand the impacts of sharing personal experiences, stereotypes, and stigma.

Gain a deeper understanding of the risks of extractive and exploitative approaches to storytelling and be able to draw from foundational principles of informed consent and discernment when listening to and sharing stories for social change.

Policy and Advocacy Intensive

Our popular Policy and Advocacy Intensive allows people from the not-for-profit sector to work alongside like-minded individuals to develop the critical skills required to navigate policy and political processes and effect change.

The Policy and Advocacy Intensive will be delivered online, allowing people across Australia to access the training. The training will involve:

Policy Writing – Developing compelling submissions Workshop

Co-Design Intensive

In this 4 part workshop series, participants will get the chance to develop their co-design knowledge and skills. Participants will also have the time to plan out an actual co-design process. 

Each workshop will include time for learning new concepts, reflecting on practice, sharing experiences and planning for real-life co-design processes. Over the four weeks, we’ll explore what co-design looks like across different contexts, discover the importance of mindsets and behaviours for authentic co-design practice and work through some tangible examples of what co-design could look like for you.
